Paris, Paul Deffis, 1869-1879
Seven Volumes. 8vo. (23x15cm), generally a clean set with slight even browning to all the pages, some brown spotting to blank leaves used at the ends of the volumes, an occasional brown spot otherwise, in one instance on the title page. The endpapers also a little marked and the top edges of the books a little dusty. The last eight pages of the third volume more heavily browned, although not affecting legibility, with a water stain around the edges The very last leaf of the third volume (an advertisement) with two chips in the blank margin.
From the library of Sion College, with a library code pencilled on the front endpaper and their ink stamp on the back of the title page.
Bound with black leather spines, grained black paper covering the boards and the gold ‘Sion College’ stamp on the front covers. Some of the bindings defective, as detailed below, and most of them rubbed on the hinges and corners, often with wear at the top and bottom of the spines, sometimes with small pieces of leather lost. Many of the boards have areas of discolouration, although this is not obtrusive on the black surface. The bindings rather dry, although all the pages solidly help together.
The front cover of volume three detached, along with the title page, the leather spine torn across. Volume four with both covers detached and the spine lacking. The leather split on the back hinge of volume six, and the back cover becoming loose.
An eight volume was issued later, perhaps containing the ‘Table Gé nerale Des Noms Ré els’ advertised on the title pages, which does not appear to be included.
