Visual Arts - Gothic Revival. The Changed Cross.
No details of publisher or date given, but mid-Victorian. A book printed in black and white outline which can be coloured by the purchaser to produce an imitation of a Gothic manuscript. (21 x 16.5 cm), 10 thick leaves (each one approximately 1cm thick), printed on one side only. The text is a religious poem printed in gothic type and surrounded by gothic motifs in black and white outline. Small numbers are placed within the outlines (like painting by numbers) to assist in achieving consistent patterns of colouring. At the bottom of the first page the words "Illuminated by' are followed by a space for the Illuminator to insert their name. Unusually no part of this copy has yet been coloured. Generally very clean, although with a little foxing to the first page. Bound in the originals covers, with green cloth over the boards, decoration in gold and black and bevelled edges to the boards, the spine somewhat creased. All edges gilt.
