Book Title:
La Vie de Gaspard de Coligny
Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1686.
12mo (16x10cm), xvi + 402 pages. Generally quite a good copy, easily readable throughout, but with some light browning to the paper and the occasional small dark brown spot. The edges of the book rather dusty when the book is closed, in particular the top edge of the book, which slightly affects the top margin when the book is open. The title page somewhat browned with a small area of darker browning at the top and an early owner’s name written on it. Two leaves of the preface with creasing in the blank margin. One leaf with a small blank corner torn away. Some small creases to the corners of pages and slight creases in the margins of pages.
Bound in full leather (polished calf), rubbed with some loss to the surface, the spine renewed in leather many years ago and a new label with the title etc. added when the binding was repaired. Split internally along the rear endpaper, leaving the binding loose when the book is opened here, and the binding also coming loose at the front.
An heraldic bookplate inside the front cover, The dexter side and motto probably the Scottish family or clan of Pringle, and a name scribbled below the bookplate.
